“And they are very likely to blame Trump and Republicans — especially when they boast about cutting jobs and throwing people out of work in sectors they’ve decided they don’t like”, a million people died because he botched Covid response and they still elected him!
This article (or something similar) coulda and should have been written by any competent mainstream analyst BEFORE he was elected. WTF was the rest of media dong??? I could see it all as clear as day from here in Australia and I don't follow US politics that closely!
It will be our responsibility to make sure that the Republicans own this disaster when the elections are held- this is Trump’s mandate, he alone can fix it- says he- and all of the Republicans in Congress as well as governors like Abbott have jumped in line as they bow and parrot in an attempt to gain favor. I intend to remain vocal, reminding everyone when they complain about the prices in the stores, the struggles in businesses- time for us to be loud and proud as we make our own Good Trouble!!
All that bad news and then the fact that millions of people will lose health insurance through trump's dismantling of Medicaid and the slashing of ACA funding, which will increase prices substantially while offering fewer benefits. trump is too dim and narcissistic to change course, he will simply double down. I have heard many economists say that there might be a recession, things won't be that bad, muddle through type responses. Yet the dramatic, slash and buen, liefilled, feed the wealthy, starve the poor {literally, with SNAP cuts) I think will have more devastating results, economically, and individually, than many anticipate.
As you mentioned, Jimmy Carter lost an election because he was the victim of stagflation, as it started before he became president, and then the oil shock. trump is doing much more damage than Carter could have imagined being done in 6 moths. Then Reagan had his own forgotten recessions. There will not be a Paul Volker around to put the brakes on any runaway inflation this time around. The Carter, early Reagan years may look quaint in comparison to the damage trump and his incompetent, unqualified minions brig to America's economy.
As soon as ACA tax credits expire at the end of this year, health are prices are going to explode through the roof. "Healthy" people will cancel their coverage, resulting in higher costs for insurance throughout both the ACA and private health insurance sectors. I'm already hearing about an average 15% increase in premiums and deductibles for 2026 and that's just the beginning.
My family of four has ongoing healthcare needs. It already takes us at least the first 6 months of the year to try and dig out from under our deductibles and we continue to struggle with costs and copays through the rest of the year. In a good year.
Add in tariffs costing my family something like ~$3000 more a year and our so called discretionary spending evaporates. THEN add in a housing crisis and we could lose our home that we've owned for 11 years.
We're so much more fucked than I could have imagined when I heard the election results last November. I knew it was going to be bad but JFC.
2 things! The election was stolen from Harris. There is good evidence and he's a fucking cheater, grifter and scammer. Plus he's thoroughly compromised by Russia. Facts.
Second, THIS IS EUGENICS™️, plain and simple. It's supposed to cripple the lower classes. Middle management ass kissers will keep begging for those crumbs off the table and keep grinding for the corporate machine while people literally start dying. The authoritarian regime may take their eugenics plan even further. Who can say.
I am sorry to hear of your health and financial issues. Stressful situation for sure. We have family with heath issues and ACA worrying about similar troubles paying for treatments along with higher premiums and copays. Republicans tell people in advance that they are going to feed the wealthy and starve the poor and middle class and yet they keep getting elected because there might be a trans kid in their stat playing sports. Ceazy nation.
I hope you are ab;e to weather the trump devastation and keep your home and your health. I am rooting for you and your family and I am sure millions of others are with you in spirit. While that might not be of much financial comfort, I wish you the best.
Now is our moment—take action against this harmful government. Covering up a pedophile ring. Ignoring court orders. Blatant corruption. The poor, the needy, and children are being abused—by our government. In the streets we must protest outright crooks and the pedophiles until after their shooting us starts, until we go down or we oust tyrants. I made 54 protest signs, and will make many more to share. You will see something different in these signs! Help yourself to this second batch, and share them as far as you can.
My marching sign will say, "I am poorer since Trump took office!"
My idea is to have us trick Republican voters to supporting a bipartisan bill to get rid of federal taxes and allow states to raise their taxes and cover everything. They will have to anyway.
Trump has 3 funding priorities:
1) billionaires
2) the military
3) ICE
If states raise their taxes and take care of their own people they can cover health care, education, housing, energy, poverty funds, transportation, research dollars, retirement etc...
My state has a GDP larger than a EU country that is of a similar size that manages to support their people.
If states are the taxing bodies, then they can determine whether they want to use ICE or some other mechanism for controlling immigrants, do they want abortion to be covered in health care, gun rights, etc... even trade rules.
States can pay a fee for the military or have their own militaries which can be used by the federal government in times of war. They also can pool monies with other states for investing.
I say we need to take our state economies back from the federal government and fund them ourselves.
The grinning young ‘fans’ of dictator donnie in the photo (mostly white of course except for the token 1 POC) appear to be fully propagandized. Nazi Youth in our beloved country.
1)Trump's whole schtick is branding and re-branding.
2)The word tariff? It's rebranding the word tax. It makes it a winning Republican strategy. MAGA doesn't get it, mainstream media is failing to point that out every time it's used.
3) Trump's bullying nicknames? It rebrands people to emasculate them, it entertains MAGA. They admire his fearlessness in mocking everyone and everything.
4) Trump's firing of qualified people? He rebrands them by mocking that he is far more intelligent than anyone. MAGA views this as strength.
5) Trump's use of the red MAGA hat? It's a rebranding of political campaigning to not address issues, but create a high school pep rally vibe that MAGA finds entertaining. They eagerly buy his uniform and his support his other grifting.
...and on and on. I would like to see talking points specifically using the wording branding/re-branding.
Likes to all the commenters and to Noah B. for his excellent article. Public Notice is such a good read both for the writing and for the high intelligence of the readership.
That said, I want to caution against irrational pessimism- the flip side of Alan Greenspan's 'irrational exuberance' warning of 1996. Don't take up short positions on your trades quite yet! There's a lot of bears prowling around right now. More power to them. But long term this bull market has got a lot of legs and momentum. You'll see.
I'd gladly seize on your optimism if eugenics wasn't the actual goal here. Some people will survive and keep hustling and grinding away in the name of capitalism. I'm sure certain portfolios will be fine.
The rest of us, the working class? We don't have investments. We don't have equity. We don't have emergency funds, even. People like me WILL suffer. Some will actually die. We are weak. We are disabled. We don't have an escape hatch. We are already very close to financial catastrophe. Eugenics is survival of the fittest.
With your Hopium that you're smoking, it sounds like you might squeak by. Maybe the stock market will rally. Yay. Good for you, mate.
Not smoking any hopium lately in fact I am a doomer on most issues. Appreciate your well wishes if you were being sincere and even if you weren't. I also GENUINELY sympathize with all who are in financial distress or any other kind of distress. If only I had the power to fix this broken world.
But I have been briefly penniless in part of my life and never had a job all the way to when I retired at age 70 that I earned more than 35,000 a year before taxes! I lived month to month for most of my life. And I've had substance abuse problems that I still wrestle with
The house I currently live in as a renter is 800 square feet. Other than this rental all I've ever lived in were studios apartments or one bedrooms. I've never owned a home nor had equity. I have owned only three new cars in forty five years. I'm on a fixed income and my medical bills are astronomical but I've got insurance thank God.l. To top it all off in my carefree life I have early stage dementia!
I know something about mild to moderate hardships. But looking back, I don't regret the somewhat rough road I've traveled because it gave me a compassion and friendliness I don't think I would have had were I wealthier or healthier! And I really do wish I had the power to heal this broken world. With all my heart I wish for that.
Aww, then I'm sorry for sharing such a pessimistic view of things because although I have struggled, I'm currently actually doing better than you from the sound of it. It's not the pain Olympics, though, of course. Right now my default actually is either wildly hopeful or some stage of denial on the road to acceptance of the misery that will surely come to some of us. Maybe me, maybe you, maybe not.
Like you, I wish I could put it all back together the way it was. "Sleepy." Anticlimactic. Hopeful. Looking up. After so many news cycles, day after day after day, though, I'm tired.
I'm partying like it's 1999 with my beautiful family right now and trying to live life to the fullest for a little while longer. I stay tuned in and then I allow myself to be distracted a bit but the dread is always there, always in the background of everything I do.
We're frogs in a pot, I'm afraid. I am being sincere now in wishing you as little pain and hardship as possible. You do have my genuine warm wishes. We're in this together, for better or for worse.
