'When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win."
No one can cure Trump of his notion that exchanging your money for goods and services you desire means "losing" that money. When exchange is untainted by exploitation, it's advantageous to both parties -- something that whoever took Trump's economics classes at the Wharton School of Business failed to explain to him...
".....Upon returning to office, Trump immediately took a Sharpie to “the most modern, up-to-date, and balanced trade agreement in the history of our country, with the most advanced protections for workers ever developed”...."
You wrote that paragraph as if the quote was someone else besides Trump. That is what Trump said when he gushed at the signing announcement for the USMCA.
“Mr. President! Mr. President? On October 1, 2018, in the Rose Garden you announced the USMCA, the updated version of NAFTA, as the greatest deal ever made. You said: “I am thrilled to speak to the American people to share truly historic news for our nation, and, indeed for the world. I want to thank Vice President Pence for joining us this morning. It is my great honor to announce that we have successfully completed negotiations on a brand new deal to terminate and replace NAFTA and the NAFTA trade agreements with an incredible new US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, called “USMCA.” It, sort of, just works: USMCA.”
Mr. President how do you reconcile those comments with your actions today? Are you breaking the USMCA agreement with Canada and Mexico?”
Trump, and his "team" have never been reliable trading or negotiation partners. Documented evidence going back decades, but particularly in Trump 2.0. It has gotten worse, not better. How anyone -- CEO's, world leaders, business people, friends and enemies, voters, STILL believe him? Fools.
When the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is smarter than everyone in the trump administration:
Ben Stein, as the economics teacher:
“In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the... Anyone? Anyone?... the Great Depression, passed the... Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?... raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. "Voodoo" economics.”
People used to use tbe word "second childhood" to describe senile dementia. I'd say that Trump is in that phase now, except that he never left the first one.I haven't seen such a display of gradeschool brattiness since Congress renamed a junk food item in the Capitol cafeteria "Freedom Fries" when France declined to follow us off a cliff into an illegal war. The French got quite a laugh out of that.
Is anyone surprised at the latest Trump tantrum? Dumb glorified.

Well, other countries do just give him stuff, like the grotesque plane from Qatar. I guess that’s his notion of trade.

Nothing he does is good for us.
