I knew he Republican’s claims of high migrant crime lacked evidence but now I know there is considerable recent evidence that it is FALSE. Well done. I pay my subscriptions to support reporting/analysis like this. All I can say is that in Australia a major party who ran these untruths would be hounded by the media when-ever they spoke of it in a press conference.

American style ‘free speech’ laws have ruined the media landscape and are made it a clear and present danger to democratic practice now that Murdoch has discovered that spouting round the clock lies and untruths can be commercially viable. Fox news employees ought to be shunned like those who consort themselves with mobsters and ‘successful’ criminals.

PS Respect and sympathy to Aaron for counting 27 mentions of ‘migrant crime’ in Fox TV over a day. Good to see that he’s on the job even if he’s not writing as often as I’d like.

PPS My apologies to all Americans that we Australians exported Rupert Murdoch to you.

As always a great article, well researched and written on FACTS. We need more of these type of Facts to be Presented, Pushed and even SCREAMED out from Real Journalists and News Sources. Stop with the constants about Biden's Age etc and focus on the LIES presented as Truths by the Crazies on the right. There is nothing wrong to having a different opinion and being a conservative in your beliefs as long as you use Facts not Fiction to support your claims and agenda. Only one candidate for President is Dangerous and Unhinged and his is NOT named JOE

I LOVE immigrants. Having grown up in Southern California...they were everywhere. We had migrant education and I never had a single issue with any immigrant. They are the hardest workers I have ever seen and the KINDEST. Of course, now I live next door to Ukrainian immigrants but they aren't the ones the Rs are "concerned" about --because they are white. 🙄 Immigrants are a blessing to this country.

Excellent post. Now, Dems. Get to it and flood the zone with the truth (instead of Bannon's shit flood)

Fox News bs hate rhetoric has real world consequences. I managed a student intern program for teens at a job I had. A bunch of proud boys showed up to a church one of the kids attended. They shouted, harassed, & threatened parishioners. Because the church had the audacity to hold service in Spanish.

The majority of the kids I worked with were immigrants from Ethiopia & Mexico. They were great kids. The families I met were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. One kid’s mom stayed up till 3am making home made tamales. For us, the people he worked with. On his last day. She even made vegetarian ones because she knew I was vegetarian.

Immigrant families deserve better. They don’t deserve to be harassed or fear mongered about. They deserve better than being scapegoated for problems they didn’t cause. Immigration makes america great. Ffs the book right wingers claim to believe in says they should welcome the stranger for they were once strangers in the land of Egypt.

The Republicans have been using race as a theme for their elections for centuries. As they were southern Democrats back in those days. This isn't anything new. It just gets even more ugly.

Latinos, Blacks, women and any person of color have a big voice. We have the power to shut this shit down by our votes. Only by our vote, our protests, taking our power back through unions will we win.

This election is about Leonard Leo, Koch, and the rest of the alt-right Billionaires vs Democracy. Agent Orange is Leo's useful idiot. Leo wants to rule. Agent Orange is dumb enough to be the fall guy for Leo. Leo isn't going to be on the front lines. Agent Orange is. They laugh at him. They know they only have to feed his ego. Easy enough to accomplish.

For some time now, FOX has acted as Putin propaganda outlet. They are pushing his disruption agenda. I have always wondered if Trump is more than simply a Putin asset.

one of the problems the Democrats have is that they are facing massive false narratives and countering only with facts. That is a problem because narratives are MUCH more persuasive than facts. I've been doing a lot of reading on this lately. We aren't presenting stories to the public.

By stories I don't mean fiction. Stories can be anything with a narrative thrust--documentaries, biographies, interviews, pretty much anyone reciting his own experience.

And so we need counter stories. Don't just cite studies. INTERVIEW law enforcers who have noticed themselves that X crime is down, that they rarely find themselves dealing with undocumented immigrants. For that linked shoplifting story on Vox, write the story from someone who attended that Walgreens discussion with shareholders, how the room was, how the executives looked abashed as they admitted that well, the stores they closed had only two shoplifting incidents a year. Have some manager of a store tell how he himself concluded that given all the surveillance footage, the problem is more in inventory counting mismanagement.

Make the facts real and relatable. At the very least, talk to whoever did the Cato and Stanford studies and have them tell how they did it, what they looked at, how they were surprised how the data was turning out.

Every study has a bunch of human beings behind it. Go to THEM and let them give a narrative of how they reached their conclusions.

Journalists, it's up to you. Stop with the "guy in a diner in Ohio" and go talk to the person whose situation improved by getting a job created by Biden's policies--you can do it in a diner if you like--let them talk about how getting that job gave them health insurance to take care of their kid's continuing problems with asthma, let them help out their aging parents, etc etc.

Sure these would be an anecdotal account. Anecdotes ARE stories, and one reason they often make people draw false conclusions is that stories work. So END your interview stories with the note that "studies show" the X the Interviewee here is not alone. And cite the studies. Give the "facts" AFTER you have ensnared the reader or listener with the story based on them.

I continue to be amazed and appalled at the things that trump says, and that there are people, millions of people who believe him. However, I think many of them know it isn’t true, but for whatever reason they’ve latched on to the trump train. It’s the hill they will die on. And for the life of me, I cannot understand how anyone of goodwill, anyone who says they are a “decent person” would ever ever ever vote for such a menace.

It's so disturbing to read how the GOP is into these tactics to divide us with distraction, lies, hysteria. And it works.

It should never happen but IF they hold the power they are shooting for, what do they plan to do with the rest of us, so unhappy, uncooperative, dismayed, and some of us up in arms. Trump has bad mouthed everyone against HIM as also being against his supporters. And his supporters, especially those in costume, have sold their souls.. they are gone, have been taken over.. like one of those Star Trek episodes.

And here we are with Biden hidin' afraid to show his age. He can get angry, really angry. and yes gaffe-but he needs to be let out of his cage. He's too fearful. He's BEEN too fearful. Okay so now he's at the border. This is Trump's country already and he's directing the campaign. It's the Trump/GOP and his media, outrunning the law, that is producing the show... thanks to SCOTUS (Trump's court)..and what a sorry sorry bunch!! That's it for today folks. Thanks.

Can anyone explain the change from "immigrant" to "migrant", which seemingly happened overnight? It reminds me of how the GOP decided to call it the 'Democrat' party, instead of Democratic, because somehow that sounded more terrible.
