Froomkin did say that WAPO and the NYT are still great papers and do great work ( I agree) though their politics is aggravating and has been harmful at times. Also their editorial choices as to what to put on front page news, what to take off has an effect; it reverberates. The GOP went further downhill ( not the start) with the astonishing choice of Sarah Palin for VP to run with McCain. GW Bush was an unworthy choice, only to be elevated in comparison with Trump. I keep coming back to the fact that the news is a business., yes with an awesome responsibility, but often failing forsaking that responsibility for the profit afraid to take a strong side when needed, to tell the truth. I remember the NYT was losing it to the internet at first ( as other print medium). But they have learned. When Trump first came on the scene- calling a lie a lie was taboo. As the danger to this country from Trump and Trumpism has become blatantly clear, the news media have not gotten the news of it still. And as FOX continues defiantly to corrupt many many minds with lies, mis and disinformation, mindlessness, distraction for the sake of distraction, it is very depressing. Media, cable, CNN and MSNBC compete with Fox and use Fox to keep the cracks wide and our concerned attention at the danger but often they come off as opposition living off of the outrage to the right and not the antidote but at times trying but for some modicum of truth to survive. But this has gotten so bad that I fear that the question of what is truth, what is right vs. wrong is the real issue.

Intriguing, but depressed as hell. I did appreciate your attempt at getting something positive from Dan, but he didn’t have much there.
