The title of Rick Wilson's 2018 book sums it up quite succinctly: "Everything That Trump Touches Dies."

Much of the potential enthusiasm for the World Cup is likely to come from expats, immigrants and children of immigrants who come from places where soccer has more fans. These are not exactly segments of the population who are feeling that life is stable for them. This will undermine the overall "vibe" for the games as well as the bars that are de facto viewing sites for people from various backgrounds--yet another economic hit from this Administration. I was part of the first generation of kids to have soccer in school and yet, after more decades than I like to count, people play soccer in the US, but soccer as a spectator sport has been slow to grow. Places with significant soccer infrastructure like DC or Chicago, are places that attract immigrants.

I'm struck by the top picture. Dec. 5, 6 months ago. If you look closely, he seems to have a bruise on his left hand. That right hand & especially its fingers are terribly swollen. We see the rightward slant of his mouth, sign of a left hemisphere stoke. The peri oribital edema is also present. But compare it to say a pic from Thur's "Clean Coal" event. He has visibly worsened in those 5, 6 months. By a lot.

Barring the award-winning Somali referee was a neat touch. I wonder how high up that decision went. And the Iraqi team photographer. That doesn’t send the wrong message, does it? And setting up the Iranians to face such besetting challenges simply to play. It’s not 1936 Berlin; it feels worse.
