This issue has the potential to be like abortion for democrats. People oppose illegal immigration but the topic if very messy and full of contradictory views. America doesn’t like the govt kidnapping normal everyday people trying to live their lives. But things can change too and messaging is not a democratic strong suit. We also need to force more transparency and associate names, faces, and lives with this bullshit. Part of the challenge is knuckle heads performing property damage, who likely hate democrats, are the ones that republicans claim represent the party and frame this as lawlessness.

You very much are right about the knuckleheads. I have participated in many protests over the years and here in Portland it became almost impossible to have peaceful protests without them being highjacked by outsiders who would cause property damage, light fires, shoot firecrackers at police, torch police cars, break storefront windows and so on. It's been almost five years and our downtown has never recovered...many merchants fled and never returned.

Progressive issue protests have a perfection standard. Republicans can do Charlottesville or 1/6 and we will be endlessly scolded that we have to better understand their viewpoints.

I highly recommend listening to Senator Padilla's account in his own words. Here's his interview on MSNBC found on Youtube. https://youtu.be/P1GdIvGvpf0?si=XeJRpRFrl7o32JtM. It's a bit different than what is heard here in the first two minutes. "Barged in" - NOT, "approached the podium" - NOT, "altercation with the guards" - NOT. Don't play into the morass of the administrations's spin.

Thank you. Senator Padilla was in the Federal office building in West LA for another meeting and was escorted by the FBI to the press conference when he requested that. And he stood there quietly, until he wanted to ask a question as ICE Barbie was bashing the city - where he was previously an elected City Council member- and the State - where he was previously elected as the Secretary of State.

If you are going to go protest, please be safe. I am sharing my Indivisible training on how to be safe and know your rights here.

My training goes back to the days of the Vietnam Moratorium and the huge Mobe marches. Most of the advice hasn't changed -- except now we have cell phones!

I remember actions in the 1980s protesting The School of the Americas in a suburb of Chicago and the organizers always asking for volunteers who would be willing to be arrested. They would go up to the fence or too close, and then the men would come out of the facility and try to arrest them and they would go limp and have to be carried off. It was always middle aged, white, suburban moms in Lacoste shirts and khakis who volunteered to be arrested. I admired them their bravery.

Tomorrow we must be both brave and safe.
