Transphobia is inherently wrong both intellectually and morally. That said trans-people are a very small proportion of the population and the Republicans banging on about transgenderism only shows how out of touch they are with the concerns of most US-ians . They will suffer accordingly.
I can well understand trans people and their supportive family members (I understand Noah is one) outrage at the Republicans recent anti-trans hysteria. That said I think strategic silence is the right move about Democrat politicians who are not as trans-positive as they’d like. The two Senate candidates criticized in this piece have realistic chances of winning deeply conservative sates (Kansas and South Carolina) something AOC could never do. If they achieved that, this would be vastly more significant than any amount of praise for AOC’s trans-friendly statements made from a deeply Democratic New York house district.
In so far as the welfare of trans-people is concerned these criticized Democrat Senate candidates would be certainly better than their Republican opponents. The Kansas gentleman (the most extreme) reportedly doesn’t support federal funding for gender affirming care. If elected I doubt he’d push for it hard and would certainly lose in the Democrat caucus. His Republican opponents would happily vote for criminalizing(!) all gender affirming care -as has happened in many red states.
Surely there’s something to be said for looking at the big picture and not getting sucked in to internal fights that will cheer those who really want to harm trans-people and have shown a propensity to do just that. Priority number one is beating the real, hard core anti-trans bigots.
Aggressively policing Democrat speech on gender issues may feel noble and ideologically pure but as a successful Australian left wing politician put it ‘only the impotent are pure’.
Shame on Dems that they never learn. The rethugs will always attack no matter how far to the right you try to move. see CNN or the old MSNBC. The right has been trained to hate mainstream media and isn’t going to watch. But the reverse isn’t true…CBS, Larry and Bari have killed the news there. Then there’s the child raper drooling over men’s asses. And Dems should push that more along with pigboy also raping little boys too.
