The Reichstag framing is vivid but the behavioral story is simpler: he pays nothing for the Jesus posts and the country pays for the January 6 pardons.
That’s the asymmetry that matters.
Approval can collapse and the pardon pen still works, which means the next two years run on grievance rather than mandate. Watch what gets signed, not what gets posted.
What is most frustrating is the fact that even though we know he will inevitably fail, we now have to watch him destroy ever more of our institutions and norms. The Republicans in Congress could stop this destruction but continue to play along with it. The futility is heartbreaking.
I expect Trump to join Hitler and others in the garbage heap of history.
But long after he's gone, the majority of SCOTUS will still be hacking away at our democracy. We have to gain control over these six anti-democracy ideologues masquerading as judges. The first step is to hold hearings on their repulsive decisions installing Trump and protecting his attacks on government, and destroying the Voting Rights Act..
In the aftermath of WWII, the US prosecuted German war criminals. One group was judges, lawyers and others who created and operated the fake judiciary. The proceedings are known as The Judges Trial, and resulted in a number of convictions. We need our own version of that Judges Trial.
And of course of all the crazy things Trump did he also had the Trump's tax cuts which have corporations now paying an average of 13% of their revenue, at the 21% rate. Most people don't know, but at the 35% rate they were paying 21. Essentially, whatever the government tells them to pay they basically say though save close to 60% of it... Son of all the ways he's not a Republican and of all the ways he's an animal, he still did this which is cost us trillions already
The enabling stooges and the megalomaniac billionaires are so embedded and completely dedicated to unspooling the institutions and building their own Dr Evil (incomprehensible) thing at the expense of the rest of us. I struggle to see how this will end.
David, many have been limp-wristed and squeamish about comparing the lunatic in the White House with the monster of the Third Reich. At last, someone has gone to great lengths to point out the obvious connections between the two in stark detail.
I am old enough to remember back in 1966 when the Beatles were at their peak, John Lennon made a statement that they were "more popular than Jesus now." While the backlash in the UK was minimal, when it hit the US it caused a huge scandal with radio bans and public burning of Beatles records especially in the South where I grew up. The WH occupant (destroyer) appearing as an AI Jesus elicited a similar response I didn't see coming.
Granted, there are those who have consumed so much poisoned Kool Aid that they will never turn against Trumpf. Still, it is somewhat encouraging to witness fissures in what was once considered to be an impenetrable fortress.
“As Hitler’s war progressed, Allied bombing turned German cities into heaps of rubble. But a delusional Hitler claimed the destruction of Berlin was a good thing, because it would make it easier for him to rebuild the city as a Nazi showplace he called “Germania.” One of the centerpieces of his plan was a grotesquely massive arch. Sound familiar?”
Just to add to the parallels of this narrative, The Atlantic ran a piece by Timothy W. Rayback.
I have avoided comparisons, thinking they are overly polarizing, but this is truly one of those times that this comparison is too close to the mark to ignore.
“Hitler’s Edifice Complex”
He was obsessed with adding an expensive new wing to the Reich chancellery, part of his grandiose architectural ambitions for the nation’s capital.
You and S Rosenberg agree: blanche, and others like him, have become alarmingly unconstrained by governmental processes and institutions. Way beyond 5 alarms, here.
I don't know what is worse , knowing that it's all an act, like he's a professional wrestler ... Or if he's absolutely authentic to the Bone. What I do now, is it doesn't seem to matter. Because whether he is a bad guy, where he's playing the bad guy, the results are very similar

Nailed him. A failed dictator dragging the house down on us all to attempt to soothe his hurts.
Quite literally dragging the House down. And maybe the Senate.
Let's get to work to make it happen! :-)

Thank you, Mr.Lurie. An important essay.
