I didn't expect much from Donald Trump's administration with Ukraine given that he has clearly been more fond of Putin than Zelensky. But in hampering the speed that Ukraine's high speed interceptor drones can reach to neutralize russia's jet drones we have Trump and the US becoming an active supporter and enabler of russian war crimes....Because striking Ukrainian residential buildings is exactly what these jet drones do.
History will look upon him with contempt as it will be for the mass of Republicans and conservative commentators who fail to raise Cain about this.....I've been looking and up to now there's nowhere near enough dissent in Republican ranks.
My feeling is that a lot of the relationship is probably based on personal corruption. Bribing people is one of Putin's stock efforts and he still has enought money to offer handsome bribes. Trump himself is openly corrupt and ever eager to enrich himself.
That said Ukraine's long range drones on russia are unrestricted and have every chance of escalating. Russia isn't even exporting diesel because it can't supply enough at reasonable prices to its farmers and truckers. It will almost certainly be producing less as the damage accumulates. I think there's every chance that the US won't get a drop of diesel and the experts all say even if it happens it will make hardly any difference to US prices.
For what it's worth I see the Republicans under Trump as a threat to democracy but my feeling is that US democracy has deep roots and can't be easily killed. It survived a genuine insurrection in 2020 and everything points to a decisive rebuke to this party in 3 weeks. Having said there's no call for complacency and perhaps my lower concern reflects that it's not my country where democracy is under threat.
America suffers from a firehouse of disinformation unleashed on it by ex-pats from your country, the Murdochs. Our bought-and-paid-for Supreme Court has allowed the fantastically wealthy to pump untold billions into the Republican Party. And more than one-third of eligible voters don’t bother to participate. The opposition party is weak and spineless and will be stymied by the Supreme Court at every turn.
I grew up at a time when the USSR and the USA seemed on the brink of global thermonuclear war. On the grounds of the public elementary school I attended, there was a towering air raid siren that would activate every Saturday precisely at noon as a test. Several friends and I met there every Saturday to play soccer, and that deafening siren next to that field remains embedded in my memory. When the USSR crumbled, people celebrated. Yet the history of monarchs in Russia never ended. That we have a “Manchurian Candidate” in the White House still boggles my mind.
“Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine.” I can’t believe this hasn’t been reported on widely in the press and that everyone is not wildly outraged! JFC, trump is a monster!

Vote blue no matter who.
Vote red democracy dead.
Amen to the first line!!! I'm actually a bit more confident in US democracy's ability to withstand the present Republican menace.
I don’t. Why do you?

It also seriously boggles my mind that the Manchurian Candidate in the White House is a Republican! I never, ever thought I'd see that.
I’ve never regretted my cancellation of the Washington Post. The column by David Ignatius proves to me I did the right thing!
