I can remember not that long ago when conservatives spoke of the consitution with such feeling that you almost wondered if they'd fall down and worship it if you held up a copy. If they served in the appropriate jobs they'd tell you how seriously they took their oath to defend it....How times change!

We'll never know for sure but I wonder if Trump has corrupted a whole lot of conservatives that were once decent enough people - or at least not genuinely nasty ones. If that is the case it only makes Trump a more malign and evil force in American politics. I seriously worry about the Trump infection coming here to Australia but note that efforts to transplant it here so far have come to naught. Part of Trump's allure is his electoral successes and recent elections here in Australia have been very ....character building of conservatives.

A great article, thank you Lisa! 🙏This is the most dangerous time in US since TACO took office. And unfortunately, it may only get worse. Where is the solidarity from the Democrats? They should all be standing shoulder to shoulder with Newsom in LA, especially the leadership, Schumer and Hakeem. I am watching this from the other side of the Pond, much in solidarity with you all. May you all take care, 🥰

When we think about the Unitary Executive theory and the maximalist vision of governmental power that the current administration espouses, we might consider Justice Robert Jackson's controlling opinion handed down in the Barnette case. At issue in that case was whether the government could compel school children against their will to do the flag salute in classrooms. Justice Jackson’s majority opinion read in part,

.” a problem which Lincoln cast in memorable dilemma: 'Must a government of necessity be too strong for the liberties of its people, or too weak to maintain its own existence?', and that the answer would always validate strength.”

“Government of limited power need not be anemic government. Assurance that rights are secure tends to diminish fear and jealousy of strong government, and, by making us feel safe to live under it, makes for its better support. Without promise of a limiting Bill of Rights, it is doubtful if our Constitution could have mustered enough strength to enable its ratification. To enforce those rights today is not to choose weak government over strong government.."

In this Trump era, we all should reject the idea of an overweening govt that wants to protect us from pretended enemies by the exercise of sheer power. We are safer with a far weaker one while still retaining and insisting on our rights.

Miller grew up in Santa Monica and knows what the LA community is, and he hates it with ever fiber of his racist, fascist evil being. He very likely wrote the political speech Trump droned through at Ft. Southern Traitor, he is undoubtedly behind sending in Marines, which has no basis in law, and the commandeering of a third of the California Guard over the authority of the governor. The louder they yell about protecting ICE and about “invaders” and “foreigners” and “insurrection” and “rebellion,” the clearer the intent: to set the stage for further use of military against protests against the Trump Junta.

Trump knows that he cannot rule indefinitely without a Gestapo. Augmenting Homan's ICE thugs with the military reminds all Americans that it is useless to oppose Trump's rule. You will be disappeared to some horrible foreign prison camp never to be seen again. It also gets the military used to being detailed to attack the citizenry.

It is laughable that the administration (Hegseth) asserts that the Marines are trained to peacefully enforce the civilian law, then the next minute asserts in kindergarten English: "People that want to protest will be met with big force," he said. "This is people that hate our country. They will be met with heavy force." And you thought deportation was reserved for illegal immigrants?

There are some obvious steps that need to happen. (1) Provide confirmation that Trump is a Russian asset, and following instructions from Putin. This evidence needs solid, verifiable, and believable documentation. (2) This needs to be broadcasted and printed across the nation but especially in red states - reverse propaganda to trump's dishonest rhetoric. (3) Discharge several Supremes. and (4) every American with a functioning brain needs to write to the ICC and request arrest warrants for Trump, Musk, Vance, Noem, and Rubio. If you need a sample letter with solid evidence then write to egraham.substack.com.

Why doesn’t Newsom order the Guard units to return to their homes? They work for him.

Lisa, I am so glad that you ended your excellent article the way that you did. The very idea that Drumpf and minions/sycophants are all hot and bothered about protecting federal buildings as illegal justification for federalizing the CA National Guard without the governor's consent and sending in the Marines to LA is beyond outrageous. He is the very same person who instructed a rabid mob to attack and ransack the US Capitol 01/06/2021 to stop certification of the Electoral College vote. The last time I looked, this symbol of our country is one of our most sacred federal buildings. What did Drumpf do while it was being desecrated? He did nothing for 187 minutes while the Capitol police fought a valiant but losing battle to keep the insurrections from entering the Capitol. I guess his concern for the safety of federal buildings and law enforcement officers on that day and the rule of law were MIA.

In response to the lawless actions of the Drumpf regime against LA, last night may have been Governor Gavin Newsom's finest hour. In a speech heard by millions, he reminded us how much chaos and illegality we have had to endure during these early days of T2.0 and a chilling reminder of what may be coming. His final words are a clarion call: "Do NOT give in to him."

Grasping complexities means you don't get to do what you want. I think it's safe to say that trump has never grasped complexities.
