The best time for DOJ to demand Cannon not be allowed within a country mile of this case was the day it was assigned to her. The second best time is now. There are more than enough reasons to cite. Even if SCROTUS denies the demand it's still worthwhile to pursue. You lose every battle you decline to fight.
Trump should have lost his security clearance by now, especially after the revelation of his sharing information about our nuclear submarines. He should never be allowed near a classified document again!
I fully expect that any judgment Cannon issues here will include the signature, "Mrs. Donald Trump" hand-written ten times in pink gel pen script with little purple hearts around it.
"... and eventually he’ll push it past November and be home free." Free - IF he or another GOP candidate wins the Presidency, which at this point is still uncertain.
What exactly useful to the defense can be found in the highly classified documents? Is there lurking somewhere a repudiation of some sort that shows that all the other documents are false and contain nothing actually endangering national security?
That’s part of the government’s argument. The content of the documents themselves are of lesser (if any) importance.
They were classified, Trump didn’t have authority to have them, he lied that he had them, he tried to destroy evidence that he had them.
What information is actually in the documents or not doesn’t provide a defense to any of those. So Trump having to review them would add nothing to his ability to defend himself.
He lacks the capacity to plan anything like a defense strategy beyond "Slow it down and pardon myself". He has no interest in actually reviewing the docs beyond *claiming* he wants to do so offers the possibility of dragging things out.

I'm not sure he has one, or ever did (the President doesn't need one).

Of COURSE she will. Why would you think otherwise?

not that Loose Cannon will see it that way, I'm afraid.

Delay is useful.
