It will always be incredible to me that any person of faith could back Trump.

They don’t follow the teachings of Christ. They’re Prosperity Gospel idiots or Seven Mountains Mandate adherents, of whom Johnson is a devout follower.

'The reason Trump’s unhinged, hateful remarks at this year’s prayer breakfast don’t disgust his far-right evangelical supporters is that they share his seething cultural resentment and endless persecution complex. For them, his unrestrained rage and open contempt for their mutual enemies resonates greater than a true sermon.'

True but misses something important: most of them won't see a second of that prayer breakfast or anything else Trump says or does. They simply do not consume news in a traditional sense. They don't think it's important because Jesus is coming back any second and Trump ended Roe.

And sadly, to some, that Jesus is smeared with orange makeup.

Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Oral Roberts, Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, Jimmy Swaggart, Creflo Dollar -- they are and were just like Trump -- Faith is for power and money and nothing else.

This is a true commentary. I see no Christianity in Trump , MAGA and his evangelical base. And the Cross wearers in his cabinet/ spokespeople makes me cringe . Karoline Leavitt, Kristi Noem, Pam Bondi are a few.

One K short of reality.

Excellent analysis thank you. Mentioning Jerry Falwell and their ilk always reminds me of the show The Righteous Gemstones, but deep down they had some decency. There’s none to be found here.

100%. Is it only the US, among western 'civilized' nations, that produces and rewards inhumanity cloaked as religion-? Genuine question.

Zealots of any religious persuasion are similar to white evangelicals. They pick and choose the things about their religion that appeals to them, and ignore the parts they don’t like. All major religions have a directive similar to the “Golden Rule”. Do unto others what you would want done to you. That’s the one thing evangelicals don’t believe.

In the phrase "white evangelical Christian," the emphasis is on "white." The "evangelical" part is about recruiting -- but hey, the KKK and its successors were into that. Someone else will have to explain what "Christian" is doing there because I don't get it.

They would happily follow him over the edge of a cliff. 🙄

I recommend the books Money, Lies, and God by Katherine Stewart and The Separation of Church and Hate by John Fugelsang. These people do not follow Christ - they pick and choose between the Old Testament (Jewish!) and Paul's letters (a former persecutor of early Christians who realized he could gain power by manipulating Christians). It is ALL about gaining and wielding power for these people.

He is *still* popular with White Evangelicals because to them it’s all about white … and very little to do with “Christian”.
