Calling emathy a bad thing is serious moral treason. End of story.

Lisa Needham, what wonderful commentary. It could be retold at any interfaith gathering.

Your use of the word "misbegotten" could also apply to those who would cast out their brothers and sisters in service to their real god and master, cruelty.

Your comment, "in service to their real god and master, cruelty" would be a perfect book title regarding this topic.

Thank you for this article. I shared it on FB. Hopefully some of the "Christians" I know will read it.

I don’t usually do this, but I’m going to post a link from my Substack. Short version: I learned a LOT about the value of empathy while being treated for cancer. https://blockheadchronicles.substack.com/p/one-of-those-people?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

The Golden Rule was never unique or exclusive to the teachings of Jesus, but it always has been and will be inherent to a more advanced civilization. To deny or suppress it makes us more barbaric. Empathy should not have to hide under a rock. It should be on top of the pedestal.

The lack of empathy is pretty well researched in psychology. It’s time for the “Goldwater Rule” to be dead and buried, and psychologists to publicly speak about the profound lack of empathy when it shows up in political figures and the associated dangers (as Brandy X. Lee and her colleagues have done).

“… empathy can become dangerous when it leads people away from building a society guided by God’s truth.”

God’s ‘truth’ is just words written by Bronze Age men cementing their control over illiterate people.

The acts and words of the Compassionate Christ has no place in this benighted, sociopathic, anti-empathic world-view. Even this devout atheist can see there is no place for this sickness.
