Earlier this month at the poorly attended Republican Party midterm convention in Dallas, Donald Trump yet again said the quiet part out loud.
He asked his assembled followers to raise their right hands and pledge to him: “I will go out with my family, my friends — I’ll do it any way, I don’t care if I’m registered or not — I’m gonna try and cheat like hell like they do.”
Was Trump’s call for MAGA voters to cheat in the November midterms another trigger-the-libs comment to be taken neither literally nor seriously? Maybe. But this is the same Trump who in an infamous call on January 2, 2021, asked Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger to “find” 11,780 votes — one more than his deficit to Joe Biden in the state’s popular vote at that point.
Having learned at the elbow of his crooked surrogate father Roy Cohn, Trump believes in a scam-or-be-scammed world in which only suckers refuse to lie, cheat, and steal. Throughout his life he has tried, and often succeeded, to cheat at almost everything.
He is America’s commander in cheat, a politician who rarely plays by the rules and who lustily fleeces friends and foes alike.
