I'm inclined to wonder if the Epstein files contain something truly hideous given the inept and damaging stone walling of the Trump adminstration. Then again perhaps it's just stupidity. They might not have realized that it would be better to release everything and get the whole thing over rather than have the damage extend over and over and over.
