If we ever get out of this nightmare, supreme Court expansion isn't nearly enough. The six fascist bastards currently seated on the court need to be removed and either imprisoned or hanged along with the rest of the Republicans who got us here.
I cannot imagine what compelled Chief Justice John Roberts to dissent given all the damage he has caused to democracy. He even used a famous Winston Churchill quote—“We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us”—to conclude his dissenting opinion.
Roberts is scrambling to redeem a reputation forever tarnished. His silence has condoned sexual abuse, racism and - in his very Court - ethics violations. History will not be kind (see Chief Justice Taney).
He did it because he knew his dissent would give the other MAGA justices cover without endangering their corrupt outcome. They can point to his dissent and say, “See? We’re not a monolith,” and credulous legacy media will do the same.
I live and vote by mail in Maricopa County. The vote by mail system in AZ has been in place since the early 1990s, and the legislation was passed by the Republicans in our legislature because there are so many rural voters (who tend to vote Republican) in the state.
The mail system we have is well designed. I got a text and email this week from the County telling me when ballots will be sent out. I get a text when it is actually mailed, a text when my returned ballot has been received and a text when my signature on the envelope has been verified.
AZ ballots are long, sometimes 2 pages front and back because of not only all the various positions, and judges, but we often have a large number of ballot initiatives. Being able to take the time to review it all at home, leaves us plenty of time to make informed decisions. The thought of doing that on the spot at a polling site is anathema to me and I imagine many others.
I'll be very curious to see what happens when ballots are supposed to be mailed out next month.
We have a good system here in MN, as well. They don’t text us updates, though! 🤔 That’s kind of cool. We can look up the status of our ballot on the SOS website, which is fine. Maybe even more secure or infallible? We also are able to view a sample ballot online, before voting in person. You may also have that option. We’re also able to vote in person on election day if our mail in ballot hasn’t been accepted yet. (Post-mark date is not relevant here. The ballot must be registered as received by election day.) At any rate, here’s to voting!

They just grab what they want, legal or not.
If no one notices or reacts in time, they get away with it.
If there is pushback, they take their chances in court. Appeal after appeal until they win, and they get away with it.
In the meantime they keep implementing as if they had permission all along. If the court battles take too long, they run out the clock, the plans are in place, and they get away with it.
If they lose in court, they pretend they didn't, declare an entirely fictitious victory or an equally specious theory, go ahead with their plans, and we're back to step one.
It worked with the East Wing, the Reflecting Pool, the firing of civil servants and closing of Congressionally authorized agencies, even the Iran War. Their strategy is simple: act as if no one will stand up to them, and do what they want.
So far they have been successful. Why? Because, out of the two branches of government set up to check executive power, exactly zero have done so in spite of having the Constitution and the law on their side.
Based on the past two years of this history, will the regime manage to screw up the midterms? I'd say the chances are good to excellent, and that if this strategy fails they almost certainly have more that they can apply the same methods to.
There is only one thing that will prevent this group from getting away with sabotaging the midterms and whatever future bullying plans they have: action from someone with the authority to stop them. Unfortunately, the history of this Congress and Supreme Court doesn't give me much hope that this will happen.

As I wrote Roberts, his will be remembered as the worst Supreme Court in the nation's history, despite the fierce contest for first place by such Courts as the one that issued the Dred Scott decision and the "three generations of imbeciles" are enough that authorized involuntary sterilization of people deemed inferior by the pseudoscientist proponents of eugenics.
