Your explanation is as good as any. I have a hard time understanding the culture wars. They seem so obvious and stupid. More baffling to me is the rise of vulgar language and insults by elected officials. We know trump does it because his filters are failing, but the others, like the VP, don't have that excuse. There's no trans issue. It's all manufactured hysteria over a small marginalized part of the population.
“Never mind that a new academic study found that people who claim they oppose transgender sports participation to protect women and girls tend to harbor hostile views toward women.” Of course, because people who claim they oppose “boys in girls’ sports” view women as weak children who must be protected since they cannot make their own decisions or possess their own thoughts. Living in the Deep South most of my life, I’ve experienced this mentality way too often.
They are likely the same people who believe that woman should not have the vote and the father of the family should cast one vote for the entire household. (Basically, believe that only MALES over 21 should be treated as full adults.)
For the record, my husband and I have often voted the same but not always. Since 2016 forward, we have voted for the same candidates in general elections. And I prefer to keep my own voice.
I've no problem with anyone decrying the repulsive practice of pushing transphobia and Islamo-phobia as a political tactic.. But I wouldn't write it off as dumb politics. It would be a very worthwhile achievement (for the Republicans) to make next Tuesday a bad night rather than a distrous one. The would be achieved by pulling off some Senate wins in states they won by double digits only two years ago. I'm talking Texas, Ohio Alaska (those 3 may very well be unsavable) but also Iowa, Kansas Nebraska and perhaps even Florida and Mississipi.
In these states the Republicans can safely forget about reducing Democrat supporter enthusiasm, and given the polls on how independent voters feel, they can probably forget about persuading swing voters. But they can hope to persuade less enthusiastic Republicans to go and vote. Note all of these states have more Republican leaning voters than Democrats. Banging on about banning gender transitions and making out that substantial numbers of Muslims are pro-terrorism may very well work. Repulsive as the tactic is it's probably worth a try in the circumstances.
I think people of the left (that make up the bulk of the readers here) make a mistake when they belittle the tactical nous of people they so rightly hope (or so I think!) deserve to lose. They should remember that politics is a profession and our enmies are professionals while most of us are amateurs.
