“Asked why he won’t endorse Harris during a Hinckley Institute event last week, Romney said, “I want to continue to have a voice in the Republican Party following this election, because I think there’s a good shot the Republican Party is gonna need to be rebuilt and reorientated either after this election, or [if] Donald Trump is reelected, after he’s president.””
Mitt is a perfect example of a person having “delusions of grandeur!” If Trump wins, Mitt won’t have a voice, he’ll be left in the cold. Apparently, Mitt peddles in alternate facts, because he has no idea what’s in store for this nation, if Trump wins.
That said, I respectfully disagree. Mitt’s endorsement is a red herring. The MSM keeps harping on endorsements by RINO’s. No one cares!
The Haley and Romney wing of the party is either “in or out,” they don’t need positive reinforcement at this time. If they can’t see clearly what’s happening, and what Trump and MAGA stands for by now, then they never truly cared to begin with, or they’re just too stupid, to know the difference.
Well put. Self serving and crass are words to describe this fence sitting inability to endorse Harris. It’s Party over Country even when the party is rotten to the core. And I am afraid many vote this way.
Thank you for mentioning that obscenity of Red Vest Youngkin. In Virginia, our governor is limited to one term. Red Vest's term expires next year, but he's angling for Vance's VP: if Trump is elected, he's too demented to serve. Vance will serve most of the term, and the next VP will be smarter and worse than both Vance and Trump. All to say, we need Democratic control for the next generation if we're to save this democracy.
With a few exceptions, republicans are now either Trumpers or cowards. This is what's left of a party that has destroyed itself from within. And still it poses a mortal threat to our democracy.
Apparently, keeping “a voice in the Republican Party” means avoiding a backbone. Has vengeance become an essential part of right wing politics these days? And what happened to an allegiance to democracy … or the Constitution?
Can we please stop pretending that Willard is anything but a huge phony? In particular, his calculated attempts to appear statesmanlike -- he only does these things (impeachment vote, etc.) when he knows it won't matter. By contrast, when it comes time to show a dollop of courage, as with the endorsement question, he will always always always weasel out.
Romney still has an elitist tinge to his approach that creates a blind spot within him. His party is gone but if you spent your lifetime in that party then you do everything you can to find reasons to hold onto pollyannish realities that can supplant the realizations about the modern GOP that Trump brought to the surface. His father would have had to run for to the right against Richard Nixon in 1968 and didn't. His father also supported civil rights reforms as a moderate GOP governor in Michigan. All the more reason why Romney should understand why the party was perverted over a long period of catering to racialized and bigoted grievance politics rather than our better angels.
"If the 2024 election were a disaster movie, Romney apparently isn’t that worried about stopping the giant asteroid plummeting toward the Earth. He’s moved past the potential extinction-level event and is focused more on who’ll lead what remains of civilization."
Appreciate your comments on Romney. I feel exactly the same way and actually wrote him a note through his website saying much the same. I also paraphrased it on my SubStack feed. My angle was to imply that the Republican Party to which he would like a voice in is gone. Effective governance comes through cross the aisle cooperation. We’re in this fight to save the Constitution from Trump the fascist and for the American people. We have so many shared values with you but with Trump we have none.
Our messages need to be copied and repeated by everyone who cares as we do, and directed to those key Republicans you mentioned.
They and we can’t be fearful of Trump if he loses, and the Republican can reinvent itself again as the party of Lincoln, with compassion for everyone, including those who don’t agree with us all the time. It is the basis for Harris’ campaign and how she will govern. For all the people.
We may never again have a chance to save our democracy if he wins.
If the Republican Party is going to rise from the cesspool it's swimming in -- something I'm not sure is either possible or desirable -- it'll be due to the efforts of those who've dissociated themselves from Trump and Trumpism. Anti-democratic parties can exist on the fringes of the U.S. system, but for one of the two major parties to be blatantly anti-democratic? How long can the Republic stand on one leg? Every politician who's endorsed Trump, explicitly or tacitly, should remain on the sidelines. As Dylan sang decades ago in a totally different context, "Get out of the new world if you can't lend your hand / for the times they are a-changin'."
Romney, Youngkin, George W. Bush, Paul Ryan, Mike Pence, Mark Milley, and Jim Mattis represent the true selfish, self serving and ultimately chickenshit soul of the Republican party. MOST Republicans have this "ME first" rot at their core.
Very well written article. I totally understand the points you made , but as a Utah resident myself, surrounded by Trump supporters and literally afraid to open my mouth with honest opinions, I can understand that he might be justly concerned about his family and friends. One of my neighbors poisoned my grass not long ago and almost killed my dogs, my cats, and me. He did kill many of the birds that I feed regularly and love. When I complained (to another neighbor, not to him) about it, I was blamed and attacked, and he was totally excused. His reason for poisoning my yard- dandelions - he hates dandelions. This was after living next door for many years, during which he had been told MANY times that I do not allow anything toxic on my property because of severe allergies. A few days after this, I found one of the birds that I love under a tree in my back yard, posed in a horrifying position that was obviously a threat. People here are INTENSE about this. :(

IMHO!…:)
Good close: “They’re too stupid to know the difference”.

Romney is a cowardly smooth talker! He only cares about himself! One vote to impeach doesn’t make him a hero!

You are exactly right Mr Robinson.

Romney is not just useless in the present moment. He’s just useless.
Romney is all talk and no action. Spineless. A real coward. Period.
