Now an appeals court hands the National Guard over to Trump. Of course this will go to the criminals on SCOTUS. Tearing away more of our nations fabric, Threatening to enter an unprovoked war with Iran. We had no such intention six months ago today.

Actually, "we" did. There's been an onging debate at the highest echelons of the Pentagon about assisting Israel in an attack on Iran for months. Reportedly, the impending retirement of Israel's foremost advocate U.S. Central Command Gen. Michael Kurilla was a factor in their decision to attack Iran and not wait to see the results of the ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran over their nuclear program.

Earlier this year, Gen. Kurilla pushed a plan for the US to assist Israel in special operations raids against suspected Iranian nuclear sites. At the time, the "other side" of that discussion, Vice President J.D. Vance, DOD Undersecretary for Policy Elbridge Colby and DNI Tulsi Gabbard had Trump's "ear" more than Gen. Kurilla and were able to convince him to continue talking to the Iranians.

EDIT: Yes, I'm as shocked as everyone else at Tulsi Gabbard actually doing the right thing for once.

Unfortunately, this is going to go *very* badly for everyone (except Trump and Miller, because nobody's holding them accountable, including Congress.) According to an 11 June report by The Guardian, morale among both the National Guard troops and Marines was "not great," and the Marines had yet to even deploy from Twentynine Palms to LA yet.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/12/los-angeles-national-guard-troops-marines-morale

Even more sadly, we have evidence that Gov. Abbott's use of Texas National Guard troops for immigration enforcement at the southern border went *very* badly, and that mission was, ostensibily, less confrontational than deploying California National Guard troops against their own friends and neighbors in Los Angeles. From September 2021 to October 2022, ten Texas National Guard troops deployed in Operation Lone Star committed suicide.

https://www.texastribune.org/2022/10/04/texas-national-guard-suicide-operation-lone-star/

The US military's been faced with a rise in suicides since 2011. The problem got much worse after the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq over 20 years ago. This is most definitely *not* going to help this problem any. Furthermore, we're going to have even more troops (and Marines) faced with mental health issues at a time when DOGE/Russell Vought have cut the VA to the bone.

Agreed! But I think Miller is a sort of stalking horse—as ever, Trump needs someone else to blame if things go pear-shaped … and who better than a Jew?

IMO, when Trump starts throwing people under the bus it won't be Miller because the only support Trump has left is from far right Christian Nationalists who agree with Miller's white supremacy.

Remember, about a week ago big ag and other big business owners negatively impacted by the ICE raids got Trump to publicly TACO, and even actually say something nice about immigrants. A day later, he TACO'd on that statement and went back to fully supporting Miller's inhumaine goals. Yesterday, ICE even showed up to Dodger Stadium! The team ordered them off their property, but subsquently capitulated and "delayed" plans they had to help immigrants in Los Angeles.

If Miller gets thrown under the bus, IMO he's got the capability to seriously harm both Trump and Congressional Republicans by pulling the Christian Nationalists away by assrrting Trump's not following through on his anti-immigrant campaign promises.

Very true, all that…. BUT how long will MAGA put up with the image of a Jew influencing Trump? After all, antisemitism has burgeoned nearly 300% under Trump. And Jews have been the historical go-to for blame.

Honestly, I doubt most of MAGA even knows Miller's Jewish. It's not like he talks about that much if at all, and his family's pretty much disowned him.

Also, the term Christian Nationalist might be a bit of a misnomer. I don't know how much support Trump's got from far right Jews. If it's significant, a better term might be "Judeo-Christian Nationalists."

I just realized I didn't even mention the LA Police in the middle of all this! Things aren't going to go any better for them than they will for the National Guard troops and Marines.

One of the biggest potential issues that could send this mess spiraling out of control is that the military and law enforcement often don't "speak the same language." For example, during the 1992 riots the LA police were escorted by Marines as they went to serve an arrest warrant against a domestic violence suspect. When they got to the home, a cop requested the Marines "cover me." For the LAPD that meant draw weapons and prepare to fire if necessary. For the Marines, that command means start shooting. The Marines subsequently fired approximately 200 rounds into the home. Fortunately, and amazingly, no one was harmed.

Yes, there are, racist, Christian Nationalist, bigoted, Trump/Miller suppprting cops in LA and everywhere else. But the majority of them aren't awful people who enjoy harming their own communities. Hopefully, the LAPD has a plan to help their officers deal with the mental stress of this mess, otherwise we'll sadly, likely see a rise in the number of officers who take their own lives, and those who do will likely be the "good cops" who feel badly about all of this.

No, I think MAGA does notice that Miller’s a Jew … but mentioning it hints at obvious antisemitism—bigotry still reflects badly on a person no matter how devoted he is to it.

As to ultra-orthodox Jews supporting Trump—yes, but their supporting Miller? Don’t think so: I know from experience that the hasidim do not consider secular Jews as Jewish.

U.S. law enforcement "may find itself having to decide between defending Trump’s troops from protesters, or supporting the president in his efforts to crush dissent." This sounds like "six of one, half dozen of the other." How is "defending Trump's troops from protesters" different from "supporting the president in his efforts to crush dissent"?

It’s a terrible but real dilemma: The cops - even in California - are typically very conservative … and not unwilling to profile and detain not just brown-skinned individuals, but also their supporters.
